Biography

Willem Dafoe is an acclaimed American actor known for his intense performances, unique voice, and striking presence on screen. Born William James Dafoe on July 22, 1955, in Appleton, Wisconsin, he is one of eight children. He studied drama at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee but left to join the experimental theater company, Theatre X, before later moving to New York City. There, he became a founding member of The Wooster Group, an avant-garde theater troupe that shaped his early acting style.

Dafoe’s film career took off in the 1980s. One of his early breakthrough roles was in “To Live and Die in L.A.” (1985), but he gained major recognition for his Oscar-nominated performance as Sergeant Elias in Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” (1986). Known for taking on both mainstream and independent projects, Dafoe has built a diverse filmography over several decades.

He is perhaps best known to wide audiences for his role as the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” (2002) and its sequels, where his performance as the villain was praised for its complexity and charisma. Other significant roles include appearances in “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988), “Shadow of the Vampire” (2000), “The Florida Project” (2017), and “At Eternity’s Gate” (2018), all earning him Academy Award nominations.

Dafoe is also a frequent collaborator with directors like Wes Anderson, Lars von Trier, and Paul Schrader, showcasing his versatility in both arthouse cinema and big-budget films. His commitment to craft and ability to inhabit a wide range of characters have made him one of the most respected actors of his generation.
