Stephen King
Biography
Stephen King, born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, is one of the most prolific and influential writers of modern times, known primarily for his work in horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy. Raised by a single mother, King developed an early interest in storytelling, often writing short stories inspired by horror movies and comic books.
He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a degree in English and worked various jobs, including teaching, while writing in his spare time. His breakthrough came in 1974 with the novel Carrie, a chilling tale of a bullied teenage girl with telekinetic powers. The novel’s success launched King into literary stardom, and it became a major motion picture shortly afterward.
Over the decades, King has authored more than 60 novels and 200 short stories, many of which have become bestsellers and cultural landmarks. Notable works include The Shining, It, Misery, Pet Sematary, Salem’s Lot, and The Dark Tower series. His work often explores the thin boundary between normal life and the uncanny, with deeply human characters caught in extraordinary circumstances.
Many of his books have been adapted into successful films and TV series, including The Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile, cementing his influence beyond the literary world.
King is also known for his candid reflections on the craft of writing, most notably in his memoir On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. He has received numerous awards, including the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Despite early struggles with addiction, King has remained a constant creative force for over five decades. With his trademark blend of gripping plots, psychological insight, and chilling suspense, Stephen King continues to captivate readers worldwide.
