Biography
Steven Patrick Morrissey' born 22 May 1959), known as Morrissey, is an English singer, songwriter, and author. He rose to fame in the early 1980s as the frontman and lyricist of the influential alternative rock band The Smiths. Known for his distinctive baritone voice, biting wit, and literate, melancholic lyrics, Morrissey quickly became a cult figure in British music.
The Smiths released four critically acclaimed studio albums between 1984 and 1987, including The Queen Is Dead and Meat Is Murder. The band’s blend of jangly guitar pop, courtesy of co-founder Johnny Marr, and Morrissey’s introspective and often provocative lyrics, earned them a devoted fan base. Tensions between Morrissey and Marr led to the group’s breakup in 1987.
Launching a solo career in 1988 with Viva Hate, Morrissey continued to chart hits in the UK and abroad. Albums such as Your Arsenal (1992), Vauxhall and I (1994), and You Are the Quarry (2004) cemented his status as a unique voice in modern music. His lyrics often explore themes of alienation, sexuality, mortality, and social critique.
Beyond music, Morrissey is known for his outspoken views. A staunch vegetarian and animal rights advocate, he has drawn both praise and criticism for his political and cultural commentary. His 2013 Autobiography became a bestseller, and he published a novel, List of the Lost, in 2015.
Morrissey’s influence on indie and alternative music is profound. Despite controversy surrounding some of his later views, he remains a compelling and polarizing figure in pop culture. His legacy endures as a lyricist who gave voice to the misunderstood and the disaffected with poetic sharpness and emotional depth.
