Sir Michael Caine is a legendary British actor whose career has spanned over seven decades, known for his distinctive Cockney accent, versatility, and commanding screen presence. He was born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr. on March 14, 1933, in London, England. Raised in a working-class family, Caine served in the British Army during the Korean War before pursuing acting full-time.
He adopted the stage name "Michael Caine" in the 1950s, choosing the surname after seeing a cinema marquee for The Caine Mutiny. He found early success in British theatre and television, but his breakout role came in 1964 with Zulu, followed by the iconic The Ipcress File (1965), which established him as a new kind of British leading man—cool, sharp, and working-class.
Caine became an international star with Alfie (1966), earning his first Academy Award nomination.
