Biography

Kathy Burke is a celebrated British actress, comedian, writer, and director, known for her raw honesty, sharp humour, and powerful dramatic performances. She was born on June 13, 1964, in Islington, North London. After losing her mother at a young age, Burke was raised by her Irish father in working-class circumstances, an experience that shaped much of her outlook and grounded approach to fame.

She studied drama at the Anna Scher Theatre, a respected community-based acting school, which led to early roles in television and film. Burke’s breakout role came in the 1990 film The Krays, where she played the mother of the infamous gangster twins. However, it was her versatility in both comedy and drama that set her apart.

In the 1990s, she became a household name through her work with comedians Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse. Her iconic comic characters—such as Waynetta Slob and Perry—displayed her exceptional comic timing and ability to fully embody outrageous personalities. At the same time, Burke won critical acclaim for her dramatic work, particularly her performance in Gary Oldman's directorial debut Nil by Mouth (1997), for which she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the 2000s, Burke shifted focus toward directing and writing, particularly in theatre, gaining respect for her insightful, character-driven work. She has directed plays at the Royal Court and the Donmar Warehouse and remains an influential voice in British theatre.

Burke is known for her refusal to conform to industry expectations around celebrity, often turning down roles that don’t interest her. Her honesty, humour, and integrity have earned her a loyal following.

Whether making audiences laugh or moving them to tears, Kathy Burke continues to be one of the most distinctive and admired figures in British entertainment.
