Biography
Sir Ian McKellen is one of the most celebrated actors of his generation, renowned for his powerful stage presence, versatility, and commanding performances across theater, film, and television. Born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England, McKellen developed a passion for acting early, performing in school plays and eventually training at the University of Cambridge and later at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
McKellen’s career began in the early 1960s with extensive work in repertory theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he earned acclaim for his masterful portrayals of Shakespearean characters such as Macbeth, Richard III, and King Lear. His classical training laid a foundation for his dynamic range, able to move effortlessly between drama and comedy.
He gained wider international recognition in the 1980s and 1990s with roles in films like Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny (1996), which earned him a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination.
