Biography

Ewan McGregor is a Scottish actor known for his versatile performances in film, television, and theater. Born on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Scotland, he was raised in Crieff. Encouraged by a supportive family - his uncle is actor Denis Lawson - McGregor enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he honed his craft.

McGregor rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with a string of bold performances in British cinema. He gained critical acclaim and cult status for his role as heroin addict Mark Renton in Trainspotting (1996), directed by Danny Boyle. His collaboration with Boyle began with Shallow Grave (1994) and would continue throughout his career.

In 1999, McGregor reached global fame as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, a role he reprised in the next two prequels and the 2022 Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. His performance was widely praised for bridging the legacy between Alec Guinness’s original portrayal and a younger, more complex version of the character.

McGregor has demonstrated wide-ranging talent in projects like Moulin Rouge! (2001), Big Fish (2003), The Ghost Writer (2010), and Doctor Sleep (2019). In 2017, he won a Golden Globe for his dual role in the third season of Fargo. He has also directed, including the film American Pastoral (2016).

Off-screen, McGregor is known for his humanitarian work, particularly as a UNICEF ambassador. An avid motorcyclist, he co-starred with friend Charley Boorman in the travel documentary series Long Way Round, Long Way Down, and Long Way Up.

McGregor has four daughters and a son. After divorcing Eve Mavrakis, he married actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 2022. With a career marked by reinvention and risk-taking, Ewan McGregor remains one of the most respected actors of his generation.
