Biography
David Tennant is a Scottish actor best known for his dynamic performances on stage and screen, particularly his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor in the long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who. He was born David John McDonald on April 18, 1971, in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. He adopted the stage name “Tennant” (inspired by Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys) to meet Equity union rules, as another actor had the same birth name.
Tennant decided he wanted to become an actor at the age of three, inspired by watching Doctor Who. He trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), graduating at age 20.
He gained early attention with roles in Scottish television and theatre before breaking into national prominence with Casanova (2005), a BBC drama written by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies. That same year, Tennant was cast as the Tenth Doctor, a role he played from 2005 to 2010. His charismatic, emotionally rich performance won him widespread acclaim and a devoted global fanbase.
Beyond Doctor Who, Tennant has showcased his range in a wide variety of roles. His performances include the villainous Kilgrave in Marvel’s Jessica Jones, DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, and numerous acclaimed Shakespearean roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including Hamlet and Richard II.
Tennant is also a prolific voice actor and presenter, and he has narrated numerous audiobooks and documentaries. He is known for his warm public persona, sharp intellect, and commitment to the arts.
In 2011, he married actress Georgia Moffett, daughter of former Doctor Who actor Peter Davison. They have five children together.
