David Mitchell
Biography
David Mitchell is a British comedian, actor, writer, and television presenter, widely known for his intelligent humor, sharp wit, and distinctive voice. He was born David James Stuart Mitchell on July 14, 1974, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and grew up in Oxford. He studied history at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he joined the prestigious Footlights comedy troupe, alongside future collaborator Robert Webb.
Mitchell rose to fame in the early 2000s with the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show, co-created with Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain. Starring alongside Robert Webb, Mitchell played the neurotic, cynical Mark Corrigan—a role that earned him critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. The show's unique point-of-view filming style and dark humor made it a cult hit and ran for nine series between 2003 and 2015.
Together with Webb, Mitchell also starred in the sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look, which won a BAFTA Award for Best Comedy Programme in 2007. Their collaboration extended to radio, film, and stage, solidifying them as one of Britain’s top comic duos.
Beyond scripted comedy, Mitchell is a regular fixture on British panel shows. He is a long-time team captain on Would I Lie to You? and a frequent guest on QI, Have I Got News For You, and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Known for his articulate rants and observational humor, he has also contributed columns to The Observer.
In 2012, he married writer and television producer Victoria Coren, with whom he has a daughter.
David Mitchell is admired for combining intellectual comedy with everyday relatability. Whether delivering precise takedowns of modern absurdities or portraying socially awkward characters, his work continues to entertain and resonate with audiences across the UK and beyond.
