Biography
Bear Grylls, born Edward Michael Grylls on June 7, 1974, in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, is a British adventurer, television presenter, author, and former British Army serviceman renowned for his extreme survival skills and charismatic on-screen presence. Raised in the English countryside, Grylls developed a passion for the outdoors from a young age, influenced by his father’s military background and love of adventure.
Grylls attended Eton College before joining the University of Westminster, but his true calling came with his commission into the British Army’s Territorial Army at the age of 18. He trained with the elite Special Air Service (SAS), gaining invaluable survival, combat, and leadership skills. In 1998, Grylls survived a near-fatal parachuting accident that left him with a broken back, but through intense rehabilitation, he returned to active life and adventure.
In 1998, Bear Grylls gained worldwide fame when, at just 23 years old, he became the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest, cementing his status as a serious adventurer. This feat launched his career in television, leading to the creation of the hit series Man vs. Wild (also known as Born Survivor), which premiered in 2006. The show featured Grylls demonstrating survival techniques in some of the world’s most hostile environments, captivating millions of viewers with his daring exploits and practical advice.
Beyond Man vs. Wild, Grylls has hosted numerous other adventure and survival programs, including Running Wild with Bear Grylls and The Island with Bear Grylls. He is also a prolific author of survival guides, memoirs, and children’s books.
An outspoken advocate for youth empowerment and outdoor education, Bear Grylls serves as the Chief Scout of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
