Barack Hussein Obama II born August 4, 1961) is an American politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Obama served as a U.S. senator from 2005 to 2008 as a representative of the state of Illinois. He had previously represented Illinois as state senator from 1997 to 2004, and worked as a civil rights lawyer and university lecturer. Obama's election as president in 2008 made him the first black president in American history.
Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He first enrolled in Columbia University in 1983 before going on to Harvard Law School in 1988, where he was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. After graduating, he became a civil rights attorney and an academic, teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
Obama left office on January 20, 2017. Both while President and since leaving the position he has published lists of favourites including books, films, TV and songs. These lists have become a yearly undertaking. Obama enjoys rock, hip-hop and soul - frequently choosing breakthrough artists. His film lists often feature the most critically acclaimed releases of the year as well as a healthy number of foreign language films. Obama's literary likes consist of serious non-fiction choices such as Shoshana Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power as well as lighter sports books.
